Lovable Lincolnton Possibility Tour

Stop 1:

Court Square Stadium 10 Cinemas

A new movie theater with ten screens and stadium seating could be the newest coming attraction to the Court Square in Lincolnton. The multi-million dollar project could go up on what is now the parking lot for the Citizens’ center. Not only will it fill a hole left by the loss of the Historic North State Hotel but it will also energize downtown Lincolnton at night for restaurants and other businesses. A movie theater will be a huge catalyst for after-hours activity downtown.

And the use of this state of the art facility won’t be limited to just ‘coming attractions’ at night. It could also function as a meeting facility during the day hosting public and private clients that require breakout rooms for conference sessions and/or presentations. New food service facilities would complement the new meeting space and enhance and expand the use of the existing James Warren Citizens Center auditorium.

Don’t fret about where to park. New public parking areas will be included in the project. Built adjacent to the theater on the Water Street block between Government and High Streets, the new parking area will be easily accessible for daytime use as well as for moviegoers and will accommodate existing and additional vehicles.

The elaborately decorated art deco architecture of the new building will harken back to the days of the grand classically-styled movie palaces of the 1920s and 30s that ‘made the average citizen feel like royalty’ and yet with a nod to the simpler stylings of the curve on the Beaux Arts Reinhardt building across the street, the new theater will complement and fit in with the existing architecture downtown.

First United Methodist Church Receives Polished Apple Award

Lincolnton, NC—First United Methodist Church recently received the City of Lincolnton Polished Apple Award for the renovation of their building at 201 East Main Street. John Gilleland, City of Lincolnton Mayor presented the award to the Rev. David Wyant.

"We are extremely happy to present First United Methodist Church with the City of Lincolnton Polished Apple Award," said Jason Harpe, Polished Apple Award Chairperson. "The rehabilitated building and restored stained glass windows is most deserving of this award and we commend First Methodist for their work."

The Polished Apple Award is a city-wide recognition program established to recognize and encourage positive community design improvements in the City of Lincolnton. A program of the City of Lincolnton’s Business and Community Development Department, award recipients are selected by a volunteer citizen group and are determined based on the established program criteria.

“The award recognizes business and property owners that exemplify community pride by exceptional upkeep and improvements to their properties,” said Brad Guth, Business and Community Development Director. “We want folks to take pride in the appearance of our community and give recognition to those that make exemplary efforts to do so.”

The review committee meets on a regular basis to review applications and nominations. A property owner may apply or a noteworthy improvement project may be nominated to receive the award. The walk course begins and ends on Sycamore Street behind Rhyne Financial. The 4k walk is a one lap course throughout scenic Lincolnton, the Marcia H. Clonginer Rail Trail. The 4k walk follows some of the 8k run course, but cuts off for a different ending route, but still ends at the same finish line as the 8k run course.

October marks the first anniversary of coffee and conversation. Designed to be a small informal discussion group to give downtown business and property owners and interested citizens the chance to express their opinions, make suggestions and ask questions about downtown and the community in general. It has grown to be an essential part of the Downtown Development Association’s business retention and expansion efforts.

It has provided an opportunity for DDA staff and volunteers to learn about the local business community’s perception of Lincolnton and the advantages and disadvantages of operating a business here. We have learned about the needs of specific businesses and been able to respond to those needs.

Around 65 to 80 percent of new jobs are created by existing businesses in a community rather than by those that relocate to a community. Existing businesses are already ‘citizens’ of the community. They employ people who live in the area and purchase goods and services from other businesses in the community.

Coffee and Conversation has provided another informal opportunity for DDA staff and volunteers to communicate with the business community and expand its reputation for caring about local businesses and their success.

Good Life Delights Opens on Court Square

The Downtown Development Association of Lincolnton is pleased to announce that ice cream is available again in downtown Lincolnton. Good Life Delights Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt has opened in downtown Lincolnton.

Good Life Delights specializes in making people smile with a variety flavors of Pet ice cream and frozen yogurt. It is a small shop with only a few seats including a counter overlooking the sidewalk that provides an excellent spot to watch all the activity on the Square. There are also a few seats outside on the sidewalk.

Good Life Delights is owned by Mark Derr and has four employees including his twin sons Kyle and Cale. Each are managers of the scoop shop. They are all looking forward to getting involved in the Lincolnton community.

Derr owns the only bail bonds business downtown which is located next door. With Good Life Delights, he has found another business niche that was underserved in Lincolnton.

“There just wasn’t a place to get ice cream in downtown Lincolnton, said Derr. “I had heard that the ice cream shop across the square did a good business before it moved so I figured it was a good opportunity.”

“Downtown is an ideal location for the business with a lot of pedestrian traffic and one of Lincolnton’s busiest restaurants next door,” said Brad Guth, Business & Community Development Director for the City of Lincolnton. “There is easy access, easy parking and great visibility in the heart of Lincolnton.”

Based on the success of only a few days, Good Life Delights is already exploring expansion plans from adding packaged ice cream sales to a birthday room and even door to door delivery in downtown. Craving a milkshake but can’t get away from your desk? Good Life Delights Mobile comes to the rescue.

The Lincolnton Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Grand Opening for Good Life Delights Tuesday, September 15 at 10:30am. In the meantime stop by the shop and check it out for yourself.

The Downtown Development Association Recognizes Entreprenurial Success Stories with 2011 Main Street Milestone Awards

Each year the Downtown Development Association recognizes businesses in downtown for their entrepreneurial success at five year intervals. Downtown Lincolnton has the highest concentration of locally-owned independent businesses in Lincoln County. Small businesses are the leading job creators and employers in Lincolnton as well as the state and country. Often great attention is given to the attraction of new business to a community neglecting the contribution and support existing businesses make to the local economy and community.

The Main Street Milestone Award acknowledges the significant contributions these small businesses make to create local jobs, increase the local tax base and improve the quality of life for local residents. It highlights and celebrates the individual entrepreneurial success stories that make Lincolnton such a great place to live, work, play and belong.

City of Lincolnton Receives 2011 National Trust Main Street Accreditation

The City of Lincolnton has been designated as an accredited National Main Street Community for meeting the downtown revitalization performance standards set by the National Trust Main Street Center.

"We congratulate Lincolnton for meeting our established performance standards," says Doug Loescher, director of the National Trust Main Street Center. "Lincolnton is meeting the challenges of the recession head on and is successfully using a focused comprehensive revitalization strategy to keep downtown Lincolnton vibrant and sustainable."

Over $26 million has been invested in downtown Lincolnton since being recognized as a Main Street Community 15 years ago. On balance that is over $1.5 million each year and just under $2,500 per capita using 2010 census numbers. Vital economic statistics also include 37 facade renovations, 30 building renovations, 271 Net New Jobs, and 89 Net New Small Businesses.

The organization's performance is annually evaluated by the NC Department of Commerce, which works in partnership with the National Trust Main Street Center to indentify the local programs that meet performance standards.

Lincolnton has been recognized as National Main Street Community each year since 1999.

Downtown Businesses Decorate Storefront Windows To Celebrate Their Independents

Local business owners in downtown Lincolnton showed off their artistic skills as they celebrated the 4^th of July by painting the downtown in red, white & blue. The Downtown Development Association {DDA} once again sponsored the 4^th of July Window Decorating Contest, where local, independent businesses were encouraged to decorate their storefront windows with a patriotic theme. The participating businesses had the chance to win one of four cash prizes: 1^st place will receive $100, 2^nd Place $75, 3^rd Place $50 and 4^th Place $25.

The 4^th of July Committee, who is responsible for the judging of the windows, had their work cut out for them this year! While many downtown businesses decorated their storefronts, the twelve businesses that participated in the contest, amazed citizens away with their creativity. The winners were announced as follows:

The 4th of July Window Decorating Contest is a part of the DDA’s award-winning promotional event- Independents Days, which was recognized by the N.C. Main Street Center as Best Downtown Special Event in 2008.

Independents Days, in short, was created to celebrate locally owned and independent businesses in downtown Lincolnton. The event, which is held July 1 - 14, includes the Shop Local Challenge, the Find Your Independents Scavenger Hunt, the 4^th of July window decorating contest, and – returning again this year - the 3/50 Project. Each event is intended to drive traffic into business, and to introduce new potential customers to their products and services.

Lincolnton Citizens Celebrate Independents Days

Independents Days is once again being celebrated in downtown Lincolnton July 1 - 14. Named "Best Downtown Special Event 2008" by the North Carolina Main Street Center, this year's Independents Days includes the Shop Local Challenge, the Find Your Independents scavenger hunt, and the 3/50 project.

The initiative was begun by the American Independent Business Alliance (AMIBA) as "Independents Week," but the Downtown Development Association's (DDA) Promotions Work Group put its own spin on the event by starting Independents Days, a two week long celebration of downtown Lincolnton's locally owned independent businesses, in 2008.

The Shop Local Challenge encourages the public to shop locally owned businesses first, and to keep track of items that are not available from such establishments. Lists of those items may be turned in to the DDA at the Business & Community Development office, 114 East Main Street, to help the organization in identifying products and services that could benefit the downtown community.

Perhaps one of the more popular activities of Independents Days is the Find Your Independents scavenger hunt. To play the game, participants pick up game cards at the Business & Community Development Office or other participating businesses. They then scour locally owned businesses in the downtown area in search of the unique items listed on the game cards. Clerks in each business will mark the card with a special sticker acknowledging that the items have been found. Once participants find all of the items, they will then turn their game cards in to the Business & Community Development office by July 14 where one will be randomly drawn on July 15 for a prize package filled with goodies from each of the following participating businesses: 36^th Street Bakery & Café, Fausto’s Coffee, First Federal Savings Bank, Heavenly Paws Pet Grooming, Hi-Lites, Kate McCall, Merle Norman Cosmetic Studio/Studio 220, The Perfect Spot and Ride-A-Bike. No purchase is necessary to play the game.

"The game was developed to offer some incentive for people to visit downtown Lincolnton's locally owned independent businesses that they may not visit on a regular basis," said Cathy Davis, Chair of the DDA Promotions Work Group. "We hope that our participants discover something new downtown, whether it be a new business or an item that they did not know was available in Lincolnton."

The final facet of the promotion, the 3/50 Project, has swept the nation's independently owned businesses since its launch earlier this year. The project asks citizens to identify the three independently owned businesses that they would miss most if they were gone. Citizens are then encouraged to stop by those businesses - to pick up a small gift for a friend or even just to say hello - as a way of showing their support.

“Fifty comes from the idea that if even half the employed population spent a mere $50 per month in locally owned retail stores, those purchases would generate more than $42.6 billion in revenue,” said Cinda Baxter, creator of the 3/50 Project. “That's a huge impact for a relatively small investment.”

Approximately $68 remains in a community's economy for every $100 spent in locally owned stores. By contrast, only $43 per $100 remains local when spent in national chains; little or no revenue results from online purchases.

“In essence, the whole thing boils down to 'Pick 3, spend 50, save the economy.' It's really that

simple,” said Baxter.

Anchoring downtown Lincolnton's developing Academy Street Arts District the new UMAR Arts Center is located at 202 East Main Street. Soon the building formerly housing Creative Travel & Rainbow Vacuum will be transformed into a retail gallery and studio for artists working in a variety of art mediums.

The UMAR ARTS Program organizes partnerships with artists from the community to teach various forms of art to adults with disabilities. Program participants have the opportunity to learn about, create and display for sale, different forms of visual art such as painting, pottery, and digital photography.

As program participants gain skills in their chosen art mediums, they also receive critical job training. UMAR has extensive experience in job training for adults with disabilities and the arts curriculum follows the same education process. After training, program participants are placed in competitive employment in the community as support for artists in locations such as galleries, museums, frame shops, ceramics studios, retail stores, catering or performing art venues.

The UMAR ARTS Program offers morning and afternoon sessions with participation at the center as well as in the community. Morning sessions include classes such as Art Redesign, Mixed Media, Drawing & Painting, Paint Exploration, Clay Sculpture and Photography. Community-based afternoon field trips include attendance at arts shows, gallery crawls.

UMAR is a nonprofit organization that promotes community inclusion, independence and growth for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through residential, employment and cultural enrichment opportunities. Since 1983, UMAR has pioneered diverse supports for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities across western North Carolina.

"Cruise-In" to Downtown Lincolnton May 1st

Classic car owners and enthusiasts will unite at the Downtown Lincolnton May Cruise-In on Sunday, May 1, 2011, between 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. The semi-annual event attracts over 300 classic cars, including a wide range from hot-rods to American muscle to classic cruisers. The Downtown Development Association of Lincolnton and Holy Cross Lutheran Church partner to host the event, which is open to all cars and trucks manufactured in or before 1974. The family friendly event closes down East Main Street between Court Square and Laurel Street and is open to the public and free for spectators.

Alive After Five now on Fridays

The Downtown Development Association of Lincolnton has announced the schedule for the 2011 Alive After Five Summer Concert Series. The series will take place on a NEW DAY... Friday evenings, and at a NEW TIME...7:00 p.m.

"We are really excited about this year’s Alive After Five concert series. We hope having the concerts on Friday evenings will draw a larger crowd and give families a fun way to start their weekend," said Crystal Gettys, Chair of the Downtown Development Association.

The concerts are held on the fourth Friday of each month, April through August {with the exception of April, due to Good Friday falling on the fourth Friday}, from 7:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. on the Court Square at East Main Street in downtown Lincolnton. The events are free and open to the public. Lawn chairs are encouraged, but no coolers will be allowed.

The 2011 Art Crawl Downtown Lincolnton featured over 80 local artists, including downtown's very own Laurie Bostian, owner of Personal Artist Studio & Gallery. Bostian was clearly inspired by our historic downtown when she painted this vibrant scene for the 2011 Art Crawl's artwork. The artwork was used on all the event's promotional items, including posters, fliers and t-shirts.

Bostian, who specializes in portraits, was born in Sugar Tit, South Carolina and raised in North Carolina, so her southern roots have influenced her greatly. She graduated from Appalachian State University in1994. After teaching Kindergarten and First Grade, she left education for awhile and had two beautiful and very entertaining boys! She worked her way back into the art field and gradually combined her two passions- art and teaching, which is what the Personal Artist Studio & Gallery is all about.

We will miss Laurie when she closes her studio doors at the end of May...But don't worry...You will still be able to find her in downtown. She will be teaching classes a couple nights a week at the Lincoln Cultural Center. Be sure to check out the Art Camp she will be teaching this summer.

Bostian has turned the Art Crawl painting and other Lincolnton historical sites into prints that can be purchased for as little as $10. Framed pieces start at $175. Note cards of the paintings are sold as a set for just $10 and can be purchased at the Lincoln County/Lincolnton Chamber of Commerce. Crowds flock to Downtown Lincolnton for the 2011 Art Crawl

The second annual Art Crawl Downtown Lincolnton, which took place on March 18, 2011, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., was a huge success! The event was sponsored by First Federal Savings Bank and was a collaboration between a handful of downtown organizations, including: the Arts Council of Lincoln County, Downtown Development Association of Lincolnton, Lincolnton-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce, Lincoln Cultural Center, and Lincoln County Historical Association.

Artists were paired with merchants in downtown Lincoln who transformed their buildings into mini art galleries. The event featured nearly 40 participating businesses and more than 85 artists from Lincoln County that include potters, photographers, wood turners, poets, musicians, bead artists, folk artists, soap makers, sculptors, and so many more. The event included fun, food, music, and art which in turn brought over 1,000 spectators into our historic downtown.

Thank you to all the businesses and artists that participating in the event. The event could not have been such a wonderful success without each and every one of you. We look forward to seeing you at next year’s Art Crawl Downtown Lincolnton!

The Downtown Development Association of Lincolnton {DDA} is blossoming with excitement as they put the final touches on this weekend's Spring Fling!

Come join the DDA this Saturday, April 16, from 10 am-4 pm, as downtown Lincolnton welcomes spring with a shopping event. Spring Fling is an event where existing downtown retailers, along with craft vendors, home and garden merchants, artists, and many others will be set up along the sidewalks of downtown for your shopping enjoyment. To make the Spring Fling a complete family event, a Kid’s Zone will be available with a bounce house, face painting, spring inspired crafts, and much more for the entire family.

There will be something in downtown Lincolnton for everyone to enjoy. And don’t forget to come into town early and visit the Lincoln County Farmer’s Market before enjoying the Spring Fling. The NC Cooperative Extension kicks off this year’s Farmer’s Market at 7:00 a.m., April 16^th, at 225 West Water Street in downtown Lincolnton.

The “first place’ is the home and the people one lives with. The ‘second place’ is the work place where everyone spends most of their time. Third places are meeting places such as cafes or coffee houses the ‘anchors’ of community life that facilitate and foster creative interaction and are welcoming and comfortable.

A community's well-being is dependent on the quality of relationships among the citizens of that community. Infrastructure, roads, water, sewer, electricity and housing provides the shell within which people live. It is within this shell that people do the things together that allow them to sustain livelihoods. These include but are not limited to education, health care, business, recreation, and spiritual celebration. People working together with shared understandings and expectations are what provide a place of strong community.

Come take part in this new local experience. Each month a business or community leader will be invited to participate in the conversation. DDA's guest Friday is Police Officer Kameron Keener . Join the Lincoln County Coalition of Churches and the local branch of the NAACP as they celebrate the life and legacy of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior. The festivities will kick off on Sunday, January 16, 2011, at 4:00 p.m. at the Lincoln Cultural Center with a message from Dr. Joy Moore, Associate Professor of African American Studies at Duke University of Durham, North Carolina and music from the Lincolnton County Community Choir, under the direction of Ms. Michelle Derr.

The celebration will continue on Monday, January 17, 2011, at the Cultural Center with breakfast at 8:30 a.m. and a message from Mr. Russell Brow, the Community & Civic Leader of Statesville, North Carolina. A youth program will follow at 11:30 a.m., in which all community and church youth groups are invited to participate. Youth will be provided with lunch and are encouraged to bring essays to share. The speakers at the youth program will be Steven Garvin and Kelly McCrary. At 3:30 p.m. the group will then gather downtown at the corner of East Main Street and Cedar Street and march, via East Main Street, to the Court Square with the accompaniment of the West Lincoln High School Band, under the direction of Mr. Tyler LaDuke, and the Student Commander of the Color Guard, Monica Self. At the Court Square, individuals will be able to attest to the impact that Dr. King’s legacy has had on their lives.

Rick Dudley, owner of 36th Street Bakery, Cafe & Catering, recently received the City of Lincolnton Polished Apple Award for the renovation of their business at 101 N. Court Square.

The Polished Apple Award is a city-wide recognition program established to recognize and encourage positive physical improvements in the City of Lincolnton. A program of the City of Lincolnton award recipients are selected by a volunteer citizens group and are awarded based on the established program criteria.

Beverly and Wesley Black completed a major project that included a total interior and exterior rehabilitation of their building.

The Polished Apple Award review committee meets on a regular basis to review applications and nominations. DDA Kicks-off First Friday Coffee & Conversation Series

The Downtown Development Association Kicks-off it First Friday Coffee and Conversation Series October 1st at 8am at 36th Street Bakery & Cafe. Designed to be a small informal discussion group to give downtown business and property owners and interested citizens the chance to express their opinions, make suggestions and ask questions about downtown and the community in general. The series will encourage social interaction among citizens and build community.

The idea for the Coffee and Conversation series is rooted in the community planning concept of “Third Places” popularized by Ray Oldenburg in his Book--The Great Good Place. The “first place’ is the home and the people one lives with. The ‘second place’ is the work place where everyone spends most of their time. Third places are meeting places such as cafes or coffee houses the ‘anchors’ of community life that facilitate and foster creative interaction and are welcoming and comfortable.

A community's well-being is dependent on the quality of relationships among the citizens of that community. Infrastructure, roads, water, sewer, electricity and housing provides the shell within which people live. It is within this shell that people do the things together that allow them to sustain livelihoods. These include but are not limited to education, health care, business, recreation, and spiritual celebration. People working together with shared understandings and expectations are what provide a place of strong community.

Come take part in this new local experience. Each month a business or community leader will be invited to participate in the conversation. DDA's guest Friday is Mayor John Gilleland. There are no formal presentations or programs. The topics for discussion will be focused on whatever interests those that attend. The event is BYOC--That's Buy Your Own Coffee.

It's that time of year again for downtown businesses to show off their artistic skills in the 4th of July Downtown Window Decorating Contest.

Decorate your storefront window with whatever you want as long as it pops with a patriotic theme! Prizes are awarded as follows: 1st place $100; 2nd Place $75; 3rd Place $50 and 4th Place $25

June is a month full of fine wine in downtown Lincolnton! This month there are two opportunities to enjoy wine from local wineries right here in Lincolnton.

On Monday June 14th, Sweet Vine Winery will hold a wine tasting beginning at 6:30 p.m. As if that weren't enough, another wine tasting will take place on Monday June 21st, also beginning at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $30 a couple. Hors d'oeuvrves will also be served.

Alive After Five Summer Concert Series Kicks-off

The twelfth annual First Federal Savings Bank Alive After Five Summer Concert Series starts this Thursday, May 27, as the Fantastic Shakers take the stage. The concert will take place on East Main Street and Court Square in Downtown Lincolnton, beginning at 6 p.m., and ending at 9 p.m. The event is organized by the Downtown Development Association of Lincolnton, and sponsored by the First Federal Savings Bank and Apple Realty.

The Fantastic Shakers, known as the "South's Finest Show Band," is comprised of Jeff Swafford, Freddy Tripp, Chris Jennings, Jim Stoudemire, Bo Schronce and Don Tetreault, who are all Carolina natives. This band is sure to be a treat, so mark your calendars and be sure not to miss this event.

The Summer Concert Series is free to the public, and is held once a month.

City of Lincolnton Public Works and Utilities Recognized as "Main Street Champions"

On Thursday, January 28, 2010 the City of Lincolnton’s Public Works and Utilities Department was honored as 2009 Main Street Champions at the North Carolina Main Street Annual Awards Dinner in New Bern, NC. The department was selected for this special recognition by the Downtown Development Association of Lincolnton (DDA) in appreciation of its commitment to keeping downtown Lincolnton clean, attractive, and desirable.

In its nomination of the department, the DDA cited Public Works and Utilities employees’ exemplary efforts in preparing the city for special events and festivals: ensuring power, water, and disposal are available where needed; handling road closings and logistical details; and collecting trash and debris. Though an event may bring thousands of visitors to downtown Lincolnton, the Public Works and Utilities employees ensure that, often within just a few hours of the event’s conclusion, no signs of the festival remain.

The nomination further praised the department’s proficiency in maintaining downtown amenities, such as lampposts, benches, and trash receptacles; as well as its efforts in decorating downtown for the Holidays – the electric division of the department installs the Community Christmas Tree and downtown Christmas decorations.

Each of the state’s active Main Street programs is given the opportunity annually to recognize a local Main Street Champion – a designation that acknowledges the extraordinary efforts of those persons who have played pivotal roles in the revitalization of their downtowns. The DDA selected the Public Works and Utilities Department for the honor because of the often the unacknowledged daily and special efforts that are made to make downtown Lincolnton such a great place to live, work, play and visit.

Art Crawl Downtown Lincolnton Scheduled for March 19th

National Guard Troops to Return to Lincolnton Sunday

A group of troops from the National Guard post in Lincolnton will be returning home from deployment in Iraq this weekend. The soldiers are expected to arrive in Lincolnton sometime between 12:00 Noon and 2:00 p.m., Sunday, January 24, 2010.

As you may have noticed, yellow ribbons have already been tied around many of the lamp posts in downtown. We encourage all downtown businesses - and homes as well - to help welcome the troops home with patriotic decorations and signs of welcome ad thanks.

The soldiers will begin their march through downtown at the US Post Office, located at 326 East Main Street. Come out to help welcome these brave men and women home, and to show them your appreciation for their service to our country.

Lincolnton Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Activities Planned

The Lincoln County Coalition of Churches and the local branch of the NAACP have announced the plans for Lincolnton’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day activities. The festivities will kick off on Sunday, January 17, 2010, at 4:00 p.m. at Providence Baptist Church with a message from Rev. Dr. Sheldon Shipman of Charlotte and music from the Lincolnton Community Choir, under the direction of Ms. Michelle Derr.

The celebration will continue on Monday, January 18, 2010, at the church with breakfast at 8:30 a.m. and a message from Rev. Robert Coleman of Shelby. A youth program will follow at 11:30 a.m., in which all community and church youth groups are invited to participate. 2009 Lincolnton Christmas Parade & Tree Lighting a Huge Success

The streets of downtown Lincolnton were lined with kids young and old this Sunday - all anxious for the 2009 Lincolnton Christmas Parade. This year's parade featured entries from scout troupes, local businesses, dance teams, churches, pageant queens and more - each sporting its own creative flair.

Some of the highlights of the parade included Parade Grand Marshals (and Man and Woman of the Year) Jim and Teresa Watson, Lincolnton Mayor and City Council, the bands of North Lincoln, East Lincoln, and Lincolnton High Schools, and everyone's favorite jolly ol elf - Santa Claus.

The Arts Council of Lincoln County judged parade entries and awarded the following entries with honors:

Best of Show: Boger City United Methodist Church - "Whoville"
1st Place: St. Dorothy's Catholic Church Youth Group - "The Nativity"
2nd Place: Glamorous Productions - "Glamorous Christmas"
3rd Place: Habitat for Humanity of Lincoln County - "Building Homes for Our Community"

Hundreds stuck around after the parade for the 51st Annual Lincolnton Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. After a brief welcome by Mayor Pro Tem, Dr. Les Cloninger, Eric Reel, Pastor of Freedom Church, gave an invocation. Teresa Watson led the crowd in singing a couple of Christmas carols, which was followed by the lighting of the community Christmas Tree by Barbara Dudley, President of the Pilot Club. Musical performances by the Kiser Intermediate School Chorus and St. Dorothy's Catholic Church Spanish Youth Choir rounded out the evening.

This holiday season, please spread your cheer where it counts, at home. Convenience may dictate online shopping or the mall, but think about making the holidays brighter for your friends and neighbors. Money spent on Main Street stays within the community and sustains those who need it most. When you shop with local business owners, the money you spend re-circulates in your community. Local business owners employ local workers, pay local taxes, give to local charities, and buy goods and services from other local businesses. Money spent with out of town business owners leaves Lincolnton and has relatively little impact in our town.

Times are tight and not everyone has money to give this season, but we can all choose where to do our holiday shopping. The dollars you spend have a real impact on the health of your city and by spending on Main Street you create jobs on Main Street. Local business owners have supported our hometown by choosing to operate in Lincolnton; please support them this year when you do your holiday shopping and spend with those you know.

Main Streets aren't magical places just during the holidays; they are centers for community gathering and unique shopping and dining experiences throughout the year. The event is scheduled for Saturday, October 10, 2009 at the Lincoln Cultural Center, 403 East Main Street, Downtown Lincolnton. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the race will start at 9:00 a.m.

21st Century Farmers Market Brings Electronic Payment Options for Consumers

The Lincoln County Farmers Market in Downtown Lincolnton is moving into the 21st Century - the 21st Century Farmers Market Program that is. Beginning Saturday, October 3, 2009, the downtown market will accept EBT, debit and credit cards to purchase local farm products.

A partnership between NC Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services and Leaflight Inc., a Chapel Hill non-profit agency promoting community development, is making this possible. NC Cooperative Extension is the local partner that submitted the successful application on behalf of the Lincolnton market location. The Lincoln County Farmers Market - Downtown Lincolnton location was among twelve markets chosen across the state to implement this new program.

"Because of this partnership, it will be easy and convenient for customers and farmers to use electronic payments," said Extension agent Leigh Guth. "So many people don't carry cash - electronic payment should be a win-win for customers and farmers."

To use electronic payment, customers will swipe their cards at a central terminal operated by the market manager and purchase market tokens worth $5.00. The $5 tokens will work like cash with any vendor accepting tokens. Customers can purchase vegetables, plants, art, meat or bakery goods and will receive change from purchases. Customers using EBT cards (which replaced food stamps in 2002) will receive tokens worth $1.00 each and can use their tokens to purchase food and plants that produce food. Customers cannot receive change from EBT tokens. Participating farmers include Wanda Avery, Loyd Lewis, Mary Deal and Art Duckworth.

The statewide goal is to make fresh local produce at farmers markets accessible to customers using EBT cards. Leaflight provides the market with a wireless card processing terminal, bookkeeping and accounting services for the electronic purchases. By using one processing terminal and tokens, fees are kept at a minimum for farmers and new customers are able to shop at the farmers market.

Travis Powell to Headline Last Concert of 2009 GoLocalLincolnton.org Alive After Five Season

The GoLocalLincolnton.org Alive After Five Summer Concert Series is slated to conclude its 2009 season Thursday, September 24 with the music of Travis Powell, presented by Tindall's Professional Photography.

Powell has spent the last six years playing music and entertaining crowds all over the Southeast, including shows at Nashville's own Cadillac Ranch. Covering music from a variety of artists, Powell says those attending will hear country songs from popular artists such as Keith Urban and Jason Aldean, southern rock by Bob Seger and the Marshall Tucker Band, and pop-rock hits from bands like Nickelback. Powell has also written many original songs, some of which will debut on his self-titled CD to be released in late October. His single, One Step Ahead of a Heartache, has aired on country radio station WSOC 103.7 FM.

Powell's band members include three of the most talented musicians in the region who have played in the area's hottest nightclubs and shared the stage with such artists as Brooks N Dunn. Jim Lincomfelt plays lead guitar with Rick Tackett on bass guitar; rounding out the band is Tracy Scism on drums.

"Expect a high energy show for crowds of all ages that will bring you to your feet and keep you dancing all night long," said Powell.

The show, which is free and open to the public, begins at 6:00 p.m. and will be held at East Main Street and Court Square in downtown Lincolnton. It is time once again for the largest annual gathering of people in downtown Lincolnton - the Lincoln County Apple Festival. This year's festival will be held Saturday, September 19 from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. As always, the Apple Festival promises an abundance of crafts, food, fun....and of course....apples.

While making your way through the event, be sure to stop by the Downtown Development Association of Lincolnton's stage, located at East Main and South Academy Streets. There, DDA volunteers will be handing out free balloons and holding limbo and hula-hoop contests for the little ones. In addition, the organization will be conducting a "Strange Change Exchange" in coordination with its "Strange Change" initiative which encourages everyone to make purchases from local businesses with $2 bills as a way of showing their support for local businesses. Bring your ones, fives, tens, and twenties by the DDA stage to exchange them for crisp, new $2 bills; then make your statement by spending those $2 bills with locally owned businesses in Lincolnton.

Whether you are a seasoned Apple Festival veteran, or this is your first time attending the event, the Apple Festival Committee has a few tidbits of advice: wear comfortable shoes, drink plenty of water, do not bring your furry friend as law enforcement will be on hand to enforce the "no pets" policy, and do not park in areas where parking is not allowed (ample parking will be available around the perimeter of the event, and at the Lincolnton High School where the Kiwanis Club of Lincolnton will be offering round-trip shuttle service for $2 per person).

Strange Change: Dollar Coins and $2 Bills the New Symbols of Going Local

If the Downtown Development Association’s newest Go Local Lincolnton effort “Strange Change” catches on there will be a lot more dollar coins and $2 bills in circulation locally. DDA wants Lincolnton residents to show their support of locally owned businesses by using dollar coins and $2 bills.

“The dollar coin and $2 bill are perfect for this gesture of support,” said Brad Guth, DDA Director. “They are not in wide circulation so they are special when you get them. And now in Lincolnton they will come to symbolize support for local business.”

The ultimate purpose of this effort, as well as a series of other Go Local Lincolnton events, is to educate the community on the importance of not only shopping local but at locally owned businesses.

In recent years, groups like Civic Economics, the Institute for Local Self Reliance and others have studied the effects of doing business with locally owned businesses versus a chain store or big box retailer. Going local always makes a bigger economic impact in the local economy.

In an often quoted study, Civic Economics found that for every $100 of local spending $68 stays local as compared to just $42 when you shop at a chain store or big box retailer.

“That money goes right back into buying a house here,” said Guth, “And into supporting local schools, local sports leagues, local churches and charities and so forth.”

Locally-owned businesses have been a primary element in Lincolnton’s success throughout its history. First established in the 1780s, downtown began as trading post for area farmers. In the mid 1980s downtown experienced disinvestment. Local business owners banded together to form the Downtown Development Association to promote the protection and use of downtown.
Today downtown Lincolnton has the highest concentration of independently owned business in Lincoln County and boasts a 90% occupancy rate.

The Strange Change effort kicks off tonight at the Go Local Lincolnton Alive After Five concert. Customers purchasing beer and soft drinks from DDA will receive strange change. Soon many participating downtown businesses will be providing change in dollar coins and $2 bills. DDA encourages citizens to participate too by requesting their own dollar coins and $2 bills at local banks and spending them at locally owned businesses.

“Now, if you have a $2 bill in your wallet and dollar coins in your pocket, everyone will know you support locally owned businesses in Lincolnton,” said Guth.

Back to School "Splash Bash" August 27

The Downtown Development Association of Lincolnton, the City of Lincolnton, Lincolnton Fire Department, and I-Care, Inc. of Lincolnton are partnering to organize a Back to School "Splash Bash" in coordination with the August 27 Alive After Five concert featuring Papa Mojo.

Firefighters from the Lincolnton Fire Department will use low-pressure hoses to create a designated "splash zone" at the intersection of East Main Street and North Academy Street from 6 p.m. - 7 p.m. All kids are asked to come to the event prepared to get wet, as the Fire Department has assured us that no one will leave the splash zone dry! Papa Mojo to Headline Alive After Five Aug. 27

Since bursting onto the scene last summer, local rock band Papa Mojo has taken the Lincolnton area by storm. With its lineup of highly skilled musicians and Rock & Roll flare, the band has developed a solid fan base who come out again and again to hear the best Rock & Roll, Country, and Southern Rock of the last 40 years.

"We keep our audience constantly guessing by throwing together medleys of Theory of a Deadman, Nickelback, Metallica, Johnny Cash and even Kool and the Gang," said Rob Elmore, one-sixth of Papa Mojo.

The band is composed of a cross-section of musicians representing a variety of musical backgrounds, including Metal, Country, R&B, and Jazz.

Papa Mojo will headline the fourth installment of the 2009 GoLocalLincolnton.org Alive After Five Summer Concert Series on August 27th, where it plans to debut its new original, "A Fist Full of DY-NO-MITE." The Thunder Brothers Roll Into Lincolnton for Alive After Five

The GoLocalLincolnton.org Alive After Five Summer Concert Series continues this Thursday, July 30, on the Court Square in downtown Lincolnton with music from The Thunder Brothers.

The band, established in 1999, has been featured at a variety of events across the region including NASCAR race events, Hog Happenin', and the Thunder Road Marathon in uptown Charlotte. Expect a wide range of musical genres to be represented as Keny Poovey, Kevin Schronce, Bobby Blackwelder, and Ace Philbeck take the stage -- the band is known for its mix of dance, classic rock, "spiced up" oldies, popular ballads, and originals. The Thunder Brothers are sure to offer something for everyone.

Independents Days, downtown Lincolnton's celebration of locally owned independent businesses, has wound down for the second year. Held July 1 - 14, the event is intended to motivate consumers to support their community by shopping locally. As part of the promotion, the "Find Your Independents Scavenger Hunt" encouraged people to visit participating locally owned businesses in downtown Lincolnton to find unique items, and then to turn in their game cards for a chance at winning a fantastic prize package.

This year's winner, Jennifer Sinclair, was randomly selected from all completed game cards that were turned in to the Business & Community Development office.

The annual Lincolnton 4th of July Celebration will be held this Saturday, July 4. Events will begin with free children's activities and contests from 5:00 p.m - 7:30 p.m. at 100 North Academy Street. Activities will include a bean bag toss, bubble blowing, face painting, tattoos, a hula hoop contest, inflatable games, and more.

Line-up for the parade will begin at 6:30 and the parade will start at 8:00. Ceremonies will begin at 9:15 at the Lincolnton High School Stadium, and will be followed by fireworks at approximately 9:35. Lt. Col. Robert Chad Boyles will be this year's Grand Marshal and Guest Speaker.

Radios may be tuned to WLON 1050 for patriotic music prior to and during the parade, and for live coverage from the LHS Stadium. All of this year's events are made possible by the City of Lincolnton and Lincoln County.

Independents Days To Be Celebrated Downtown July 1 -14

Independents Days will once again be celebrated in downtown Lincolnton July 1 - 14. Hot on the heels of being named "Best Downtown Special Event 2008" by the North Carolina Main Street Center, this year's Independents Days will include the Shop Local Challenge, the Find Your Independents scavenger hunt, a 4th of July window decorating contest, and the 3/50 project.

The initiative was begun by the American Independent Business Alliance (AMIBA) as "Independents Week," but the Downtown Development Association's Promotions Work Group put its own spin on the event by starting Independents Days, a two week long celebration of downtown Lincolnton's locally owned independent businesses, in 2008.

The Shop Local Challenge encourages the public to shop locally owned businesses first, and to keep track of items that are not available from such establishments. Lists of those items may be turned in to the DDA at the Business & Community Development office, 114 East Main Street, to help the organization in identifying products and services that could benefit the downtown community. Similarly, the 3/50 Project asks citizens to identify the three independently owned businesses that they would miss most if they were to close. Citizens are then encouraged to stop by those businesses - to pick up a small gift for a friend or even just to say hello - as a way of showing their support. The project also encourages people to spend $50 each month at an independent business. If half of the employed population of the U.S. did this, their purchases would generate more than $42.6 billion in revenue. For more information on the 3/50 Project, visit www.the350project.net.

Perhaps one of the more unique activities of Independents Days is the Find Your Independents scavenger hunt. To play the game, participants will pick up game cards at the Business & Community Development Office or other participating businesses. They will then scour locally owned businesses in the downtown area in search of the unique items listed on the game cards. Clerks in each business will mark the card with a special sticker acknowledging that the items have been found. Once participants find all of the items, they will then turn their game cards in to the Business & Community Development office where one will be randomly drawn on July15 for a prize package filled with goodies from each of the participating businesses.

The DDA is also sponsoring a window decorating contest for downtown Lincolnton businesses. Windows will be judged on Saturday, July 4th. Winners will be announced on The Inside Wire Monday, July 6th.

National Band Paris Keeling to Headline June 25 Alive After Five

Paris Keeling, the nationally acclaimed rock band featuring Marty Paris and Keely Keeling, will take the stage at 7:00 p.m. on June 25, 2009 on the Courthouse Square in downtown Lincolnton as part of the 2009 www.GoLocalLincolnton.org Alive After Five Concert Series. The event is being sponsored by the Downtown Development Association of Lincolnton and will run from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. It is free and open to the public. Food and beverages will be available at the event for purchase. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs; however, no coolers will be allowed.

While Paris Keeling is planning a Fall 2009 west coast tour and having recently performed at the Winchester in Cleveland, Ohio, the band did not hesitate when asked to headline a local show. According to Paris, who calls Lincolnton home, "I was thrilled when the DDA asked us to headline one of this summer's Alive After Five concerts. It's always great to play to your hometown crowd." Paris Keeling's performance is timed in conjunction with the upcoming July re-release of their well received End of Ride album. The re-release features five new bonus tracks in addition to all tracks of the original recording.

In addition to his work with Paris Keeling, Paris runs a recording studio in Lincolnton and frequently works with many musicians in a number of different areas including songwriting, recording and production. Knowing that one of the goals of the concert series is to feature and promote local talent, local acts will also be performing in addition to Paris Keeling on June 25. Paris will perform a solo set featuring vocal and musical accompaniment from local musician Beth Bailey (whose country album Marty is producing). In addition, The Mason Dixon Band will take the stage to perform a mixed set including country and rock favorites with a little beach music thrown in for good measure.

The Downtown Development Association of Lincolnton (DDA) and United Way of Lincoln County have joined forces in launching Volunteer Lincolnton, a community-wide volunteer center, in coordination with National Volunteer Week.

The center will have two distinct presences - one in the offices of United Way of Lincoln County, located at 206 East Main Street in downtown Lincolnton, the other online at www.volunteerlincolnton.blogspot.com. Positions will be posted on the Web site with information for interested volunteers to contact the non-profit groups directly; however, potential volunteers may also complete an application in-person at the volunteer center to be matched with organizations whose needs most directly correlate with the applicants' skills and interests.

Positions are available with a variety of organizations, including Helping Hands Health Clinic, Girl Scouts of the Piedmont Council, and A Place to Grow, and range from clerical work to yard work.
